Guillaume Fauteux

In order to carry out these two projects on waves and plumes, we had to conduct our experiments at the hydrodynamics laboratory of the École Polytechnique de Montréal. Can you imagine? Two young guys in Secondary IV using graduate student equipment in the evening from 4:00 p.m. to midnight! We felt pretty important. And to think that, at first, we had thought about designing our own wave pool. Along with the equipment, however, came a lot of hard work. We had to be pretty resourceful to conduct our experiments, which required us to solve some major technical problems. In addition to our experiments, we had to develop a wave generator and a device that would deposit a layer of fresh water over salt water. We also had to obtain more than 800 kg of salt. And that's just skimming the surface! Three of our four months in the laboratory were spent solving technical problems. Fortunately, we benefited from the advice of a lab technician and a number of scientists who helped us get back on track when we strayed too far. Contact with real scientists in an actual research setting made for an unforgettable experience.
