Romina Perri, 1998 to 2001 Science Fairs |

The following information is taken from Portraits
de lauréats created by the Conseil du loisir scientifique
in partnership with the ministère de la Recherche, de la
Science et de la Technologie du Québec.
Grapes to prevent cancer
Have you ever thought that foods could prevent
cancer? After watching a documentary on the subject, Romina Perri started
to look into flavanoids, anti-cancer food products found in some fruits
and vegetables. "The objective of my project was to examine the potential
of resveratrol, a compound found in grape skin, as an anti-cancer therapeutic.
I wanted to verify whether it can restore gap junction intercellular communications
(GJIC) by increasing connexin 43 expression (Cx43 expression) in cancer
cell lines," she explains.
The project led her to the Science Fairs. Curious and persistent,
she truly enjoyed her Science Fair experience for many reasons. "All
my projects until now have dealt with biotechnology. The Science Fairs
allowed me to learn a lot more about other fields in science, such
as agriculture, astronomy, physics and robotics," Romina says.
The other thing she enjoyed most was travelling to the many fairs
she participated in: Mexico, France, the United States and several
Canadian cities. "The various regional, provincial, national
and international Science Fairs gave me the opportunity to learn more
about different cultures and to develop a deep appreciation and understanding
for them," she says.
Fascinated by the biomedical and biotechnology fields, Romina Perri,
who is planning for study Dentistry, yearns to find remedies for diseases.
And she will always keep in mind the ultimate lesson she learned at
the Science Fairs: "Whatever the human brain can conceive and
believe, it can achieve!"
